HISTORY OF THE LEONBERGER

ORIGIN

The Leonberger dog breed is a giant dog breed that originated in the 19th century in Leonberg, Germany. The breed was created by Heinrich Essig, a town councillor and dog breeder, who aimed to develop a dog that resembled the lion on the town’s crest. To achieve this, Essig crossed the Saint Bernard with the Newfoundland and later introduced the Great Pyrenees into the breeding program. The result was a magnificent, lion-like dog with a warm, gentle, and family-loving temperament. Leonbergers quickly gained popularity among European royalty and nobility, with notable owners including Napoleon II, Emperor Napoleon III, the Prince of Wales, and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. SIZE & COLORS

The Leonberger is a large to giant breed, known for its impressive and noble appearance. Males typically stand 71–80 cm tall and weigh between 54–77 kg, while females are slightly smaller, measuring 65–74 cm in height and weighing 45–61 kg. Despite their size, Leonbergers are known for their graceful, balanced movement and lion-like presence.

The Leonberger has a medium to long, water-resistant double coat with a distinctive lion-like mane around the neck and chest, particularly prominent in males. The coat colour ranges from lion yellow, golden to red-brown, and red, always with a black mask on the face. A black overlay on the outer coat is also common and accepted within breed standards. Their warm, dark-brown eyes and elegant bearing make them one of the most visually striking breeds in the world.

ABOUT THE LEONBERGER BREED

The Leonberger, often nicknamed the “Leo,” is one of the most majestic giant dog breeds in the world. Known for their lion-like appearance, warm golden coat, and black mask, Leos are as beautiful on the outside as they are gentle and loving on the inside.

They are not suited to being left alone for long periods, as they bond deeply with their families and can become anxious without regular interaction and companionship.

Leonbergers do best with a high-quality, protein-rich diet suited for large and giant breeds. Their diet should support healthy joint development, especially during the puppy growth stages. Always choose food free from artificial preservatives and fillers, and consult your vet for guidance on portion sizes appropriate for their age and weight.

The average life expectancy of a Leonberger is 8–9 years. Like all giant breeds, they are predisposed to certain health conditions including Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, Leonberger Polyneuropathy (LPN), Dilated Cardiomyopathy, and Osteosarcoma.
